How a Stray Cat and an Expecting Mom Created an Unforgettable Bond

How a Stray Cat and an Expecting Mom Created an Unforgettable Bond

Lauren Maners, an avid animal fosterer, had decided to take a hiatus from her passion as she neared the birth of her daughter, Kylie. Speaking to The Dodo, she explained, “Having a rich history in fostering and rehabilitating animals, I chose to pause as my pregnancy progressed. The animals I cared for needed intense attention, which I knew would be challenging post-baby.” This decision stood firm until she encountered Dove, a pregnant, injured cat.

Returning from breakfast one morning, Maners and her husband spotted Dove in an empty parking lot. “That morning, I had resolved to cease fostering, but seeing Dove’s condition, pregnant and injured, changed everything,” Maners recalled. She felt an instant connection, being pregnant herself. After luring the cat with food and a jacket, they rushed her to the vet.

Dove, as they named her, came home with them after treatment. Despite efforts to find her owners, they learned she had been a stray most of her life. Maners chose to temporarily break her rule and foster Dove and her soon-to-arrive kittens, hoping to find them forever homes.

Dove quickly settled in, forming a special bond with Maners. “She became my shadow, enjoying our shared breakfasts outdoors while I stroked her belly,” Maners fondly remembered. This unique companionship grew as both approached the ends of their pregnancies.

The parallel journey of Maners and Dove took a remarkable turn when Maners returned home from the hospital with her newborn, Kylie, only to discover Dove had also given birth. “It’s possible they were born at the same time,” Maners mused, amazed by the coincidence.

Watching Kylie grow alongside Dove’s kittens was a heartwarming experience for Maners. “Kylie began to notice the kittens at 5 weeks old, and they were equally curious about her,” she shared. After months of fostering, Maners found loving homes for the cat family, ensuring they stayed close enough for visits.

“Thankfully, Dove lives with a friend, so I’m regularly updated. And many kittens were adopted by acquaintances, allowing frequent reunions,” she added. Breaking her rule led to an irreplaceable experience for both Maners and her daughter, Kylie, one that intertwined the lives of two mothers and their young in the most extraordinary way.
